Written by Sarah Emtage
In the beginning was the Word,
and he spoke to the darkness
and turned it to light.
He stretched out our lungs,
and crafted our throats.
He detailed our tongues and our lips.
He breathed in our nostrils the breath of his life,
so that we in return
could breathe meaning in sounds,
to sink into ears,
and strike on the drums,
to be heard and to bear
a spark of the life that he gave.
We breathed in and broke
up the silence of earth.
We took air and spoke
in the birth of our mirth,
reflecting and echoing,
untying knots;
dancing, advancing
in dueling thoughts.
The Word made these wonders,
and he said “It is good.”
It is a good thing to listen,
and to be understood.
